Baby and Toddler Room
The baby and toddler room comprises of a spacious and bright open plan room with a variety of fundamental spaces to explore. Areas include a large, cosy den for children to develop their playful, schematic investigations, a house corner to enhance role-play, a construction area where early numeracy is evident, a large loose parts and heuristic area to encourage curiosity and a sand and water tray. As well as water, there are a number of malleable materials explored daily to enhance scientific investigation. The room has a soft, comfortable story corner where stories, singing and musical instruments are enjoyed. There is a climbing frame and tunnel where children can develop their gross motor skills. We have a separate sleep room, where children are supported by their care givers to sleep in cosy pods or on mats with children’s individual bedding. There is a separated bathroom and hygienic nappy changing area.
The Baby and Toddler Room provides:
- A warm, nurturing and loving environment for all babies and young children to feel safe, secure and happy during their time at nursery.
- Meaningful interactions and trusting relationships between caregivers and families in order to meet everyone’s needs.
- A variety of daily sensory play experiences
- The freedom and confidence for children to make their own choices, surrounded by caregivers who understand the importance of respecting children’s rights.
- Daily feedback with caregivers on how your child’s day has been, what they have explored and any further information.
- Personal learning plans containing observations and photos of your child’s interests and development progress, documented by your child’s key person.
- Opportunities for safe and fun learning experiences in the outdoor areas as well as outings around the community and further afield.
- Encouragement in healthy eating habits as a social experience, with mealtimes viewed as a special interaction that staff and children take their time to enjoy.
- A happy and energetic atmosphere which helps children feel stimulated.
- Qualified caregivers who are on a continuous learning journey to constantly improve practice and develop their knowledge.
Pre-School Room
The Pre-School room offers a welcoming and caring large playroom. Children can engage in play-based experiences where they can lead their own learning. Our wide range of resources are labelled to allow children to choose and access them independently. Literacy, numeracy and health and well-being are focus areas in the room, however all areas of the Curriculum for Excellence are embedded throughout the whole nursery. Child sized toilets and sinks are directly accessed via the playroom. The door to access the side garden is always open to allow children to choose indoor or outdoor play. We have a separate room where children can engage in more focused learning experiences and enjoy quiet time.
The Pre-School Room provides:
- Child initiated learning opportunities indoors and outdoors.
- Encouragement for children to make their own choices and access their own resources.
- Opportunities for children to develop their independence – for example pouring their own drinks, preparing and serving their own snack.
- Encouragement to recognise their name and other familiar names/words through play.
- A variety of mark making opportunities, setting the foundations for writing.
- Ongoing engagement through interesting topics based on children’s interests, supporting them in enhancing their listening skills.
- Daily implementation of the early level outcomes of the Curriculum for Excellence.
- A named key person who monitors development and establishes positive relationships with parents/carers to ensure we always work in partnership with each other.
- An online update of children’s learning and development progress through online Learning Journals.
- Opportunities to see the surrounding community through outings to local amenities such as Inverleith Park, Stockbridge, The Botanical Gardens and further afield.
